We tried them all, on our own Mac and iPhone, before writing a single line of code. The pioneers who invented the digital vault turned into subscriptions: impossible to open your own vault without paying, every month, forever. The open source alternatives look dated, built for insiders. The vaults built into the Apple ecosystem are convenient, but quickly feel cramped once you want folders, a real generator, or syncing worth the name. And the vaults built for businesses impose a complexity, teams, roles, administration, that a personal use has no need for. Every time, the same conclusion: it’s almost there. Almost.

Is Gavroche really 100% local?
Yes. By default, your passwords never leave your devices: the vault is encrypted (AES-GCM) and stored only on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. There's no account to create and no Gavroche server. iCloud sync exists, but it's optional, off by default, and end-to-end encrypted: even when enabled, nobody but you can read your vault.
Which devices does Gavroche work on?
Gavroche is available on Mac (Mac App Store) and on iPhone and iPad (App Store). Autofill works in Safari and in your apps, on every platform, with Face ID or Touch ID unlock.
How much does Gavroche cost?
19.99 USD once on Mac: no subscription, no yearly renewal, no feature that unlocks by paying more. For comparison, most competing password managers charge between 20 and 50 USD a year, with Gavroche, a single year of their subscription is more than enough to cover a lifetime of use, future updates included. On iPhone and iPad, the app is entirely free.
Can I import my existing passwords?
Yes. Gavroche imports CSV files exported from Apple's Passwords app, Chrome, or Firefox, as well as 1Password's .1pif format. Duplicates are detected automatically, and each imported entry gets its site's logo fetched for it.
How are my passwords protected?
The vault is encrypted with AES-GCM, using a key derived from your master password (PBKDF2, 600,000 iterations). On top of that: biometric unlock, automatic locking, a clipboard that clears itself, and protection against screen recording. Security isn't an option in Gavroche, it's the architecture.
How does syncing between Mac and iPhone work?
You choose between two methods, never forced on you: a direct local Wi-Fi sync, device to device, without going through the internet, or a background iCloud sync, end-to-end encrypted with a key only you hold.
